"The wise find pleasure in water; the virtuous find pleasure in mountains." — Confucius
The Oriental at Splendid China
April 1993

Great hospitality is more than providing a place to stay—it creates a destination that guests remember long after their visit. The Oriental at Splendid China was conceived as an immersive luxury resort where architecture, landscape, culture, dining, retail, and wellness combine to create a complete hospitality experience. Rather than functioning as a conventional hotel, the project was envisioned as the ceremonial gateway to one of Florida's most ambitious cultural destinations, establishing an identity that elevated the entire guest experience from the moment of arrival.
Designed by Guycorp under the direction of Guy Tetrick, the project expanded upon the vision of Florida Splendid China by transforming the arrival sequence into a world-class hospitality destination. Inspired by the timeless architecture, gardens, waterways, and ceremonial planning traditions of China, the development integrates luxury accommodations, signature restaurants, specialty retail, waterfront promenades, gardens, and public gathering spaces into a cohesive resort environment. Every architectural element was carefully composed to create memorable first impressions while supporting the operational requirements of a major international hospitality destination.
More than a hotel, The Oriental demonstrates Guycorp's philosophy that hospitality architecture should become part of the destination itself. By blending authentic cultural inspiration with contemporary resort planning, the project illustrates how architecture can strengthen a brand, extend guest length of stay, increase commercial opportunities, and transform arrival into an unforgettable experience. It remains an example of creating hospitality environments where storytelling, business strategy, and timeless design work together as one integrated vision.
