“Cultural architecture has an unusual responsibility: it must make room for discovery without pretending to contain an entire civilization.”

The Art of Getting Lost. On Purpose.

China has spent five thousand years becoming impossible to summarize. We thought it deserved something more interesting than a map.
Splendid China began with an architectural proposition: what if a destination could be designed not simply to represent a culture, but to reward the curiosity that culture inspires?
The challenge was one of scale, both physical and imaginative. Imperial architecture, contemplative gardens, theatrical spectacle, commerce, and hospitality each speak a different spatial language. The opportunity was to give them a shared sense of place without asking them to become the same thing.
The master-planning concept organizes these experiences as a sequence of discoveries. Monumental arrivals establish anticipation. Gardens invite a slower pace. Paths, bridges, and waterways create transitions in which the journey becomes as compelling as the destination. The Oriental introduces a complementary hospitality experience, extending the architectural narrative beyond the cultural attractions.
Environmental graphics play an unusually important role. Rather than merely telling visitors where to go, the signage concepts give each district a recognizable personality while maintaining a common visual heritage. Even the practical business of finding a restaurant becomes part of the storytelling.
The larger ambition is not to compress centuries of history into an afternoon. It is to create a place where architecture encourages exploration, where cultural references invite questions, and where the next discovery feels more compelling than the last.
After all, getting lost is considerably more enjoyable when someone has thoughtfully designed the journey.
