The Ocean Does Not Need a Theme

The best aquarium trick is still the fish.
LOTTE World Aquarium occupies a very different kind of territory inside Seoul’s enormous LOTTE World complex. More than 55,000 marine animals representing over 650 species inhabit 13 zones organized around ecosystems from the world’s oceans. That gives the attraction something most entertainment environments spend fortunes trying to manufacture: genuine wonder. Visit Seoul
GUY’s design approach begins by refusing to compete with it.
The project recasts the aquarium experience with the discipline of a contemporary museum rather than the visual vocabulary of a conventional themed attraction. Arrival, queue, pre-show and post-show become part of the exhibition; lighting becomes curatorial; graphics become information rather than decoration; technology can transform an entire environment and then virtually disappear. More exuberant storytelling is reserved for the moments that deserve it—gateways, special exhibits, conservation messaging, mobile activations and events—rather than applied indiscriminately to every available surface.
It is a deceptively difficult balance: spectacle without clutter, entertainment without infantilizing the audience, education without feeling educational. GUY brings architecture, museum planning, graphics, lighting, media, branding and entertainment design together precisely because an aquarium is all of those things at once.
The commercial proposition follows naturally. People may buy a ticket to see marine life. What brings them back—and what they tell someone else about—is how the experience made discovery feel.

“People protect what they love.”
